Talavera

Talavera

When it comes to naming my pieces, I like to wait until the piece is finished and then see what images, feelings and thoughts it provokes.  Even though I know what I want to create from concept to the finished article, I tend not start with a name because I don’t like being constrained and I can change tack throughout the creative process.  Having to stick to one narrative holds me back and I it find quite limiting.
I don’t like the idea of simply numbering my pieces either.  It’s my way of inviting the viewer to see what they see when looking at lines, shapes and colours.  Is it what I see, or something totally different and meaningful to them?

Talavera - I immediately saw tiles when looking at this piece.  Having initially thought that the tile in my minds eye was Italian, I learnt that they were in fact a mixture of different styles, mainly originating in Spain.

The style most similar to my design are those of traditional Mexican ceramics from the state of Puebla, specifically called Talavera pottery - it is named after the city of Talavera de Reina in central Spain, the only other place outside Puebla to make Talavera.

I went down a ceramic black hole online and found that there are also similatires between tile designs from Argentina, Brazil and Iran, and discovered that Mexican Talavera tiles incorporate Chinese and Arab influences too.  Who knew the humble tile had such a cross-cultural influence.
